Helix Nebula (NGC 7293)

The closest large planetary nebula to Earth, and in photographs it stares right back at you, which earned it the nickname Eye of God. It is the unwrapped atmosphere of a dying star, glowing shells of gas around a tiny white dwarf. Close up images reveal thousands of comet like knots of gas, each one larger than our solar system.
