Polaris, the North Star

STAR · the still point of the sky
DISTANCE about 430 light yearsSPECIAL marks due northACTUALLY three stars

The one star that never seems to move. Polaris stands almost exactly above Earth's north pole, so the entire sky appears to wheel around it, which has guided travelers and sailors for centuries. It is not the brightest star, just perfectly placed, and it will not keep the job forever: the slow wobble of Earth's axis passes the title on every few thousand years. Polaris is also a pulsing giant with two faint companions.
