The first spacecraft to cross the asteroid belt and fly past Jupiter, back when nobody knew whether either was survivable. Pioneer 10 carries a golden plaque showing a man, a woman and a map of where Earth lives, our first deliberate message to the stars. Its radio fell silent in 2003, but the little trailblazer keeps drifting outward forever.
