Seasons exist because Earth is tilted. When your half of the planet leans toward the Sun, sunlight hits steeply and days run long: summer. Half a year later the same half leans away: winter. The distance to the Sun has almost nothing to do with it; in fact, Earth is closest to the Sun in early January, in the middle of the northern winter.
