Mars' smaller outer moon, so tiny that from the Martian surface it looks like an extra bright star. Thick dust has softened its craters into gentle dimples. Both Martian moons might be captured asteroids, or debris from a giant impact on Mars long ago. A Japanese mission plans to bring a piece of Phobos home, which may settle the question.
