SKY CULTURE · one river, many names
Every culture explained the glowing band: Greeks saw spilled milk of the goddess Hera, hence our name. China and Japan see a silver river separating two celestial lovers who meet once a year, when magpies build them a bridge. Finns and Baltic peoples called it the Birds' Path, correctly intuiting that migrating birds follow it south. The Kalahari San say it is campfire ashes thrown into the sky to light the way home. All of them stand under the same hundred billion stars.
