The ecliptic is the line the Sun travels along the sky through the year, which is really our own orbit projected outward. Because all planets and the Moon orbit in nearly the same plane, they all wander close to this line, through the constellations called the zodiac. To be honest about it: the constellations are real, but horoscopes that read your future from them are not science. And thanks to Earth's slow wobble, the Sun actually crosses thirteen constellations, not twelve.
