The Great Rift
DARK NEBULA · the Milky Way's dark seam
On dark summer nights the Milky Way seems split lengthwise by a dark seam, as if someone had drawn a charcoal line through the glowing band. That is the Great Rift: a chain of overlapping dust clouds hiding the starlight behind them. The Inca saw animals in these dark shapes, constellations made of shadow instead of stars.
