Orion's loyal hunting dog, following its master across the winter sky with blazing Sirius as its eye, the brightest star of the entire night. The hottest weeks of summer are called dog days after this dog: in antiquity, Sirius rose with the Sun during them, and people blamed the combined heat of star and Sun. Wrong physics, immortal phrase.
