The biggest of the Milky Way's companion galaxies, hanging in the southern sky like a detached, glowing cloud. Sailors with Magellan wrote it into their logs five centuries ago. It is packed with star forming regions, including the mighty Tarantula Nebula, and in 1987 it hosted the closest supernova of modern times, watched live by telescopes worldwide.
