The black hole that settled the question of whether black holes exist at all. Cygnus X-1 pulls gas off its giant companion star; the gas spirals in, heats to millions of degrees and screams in X-rays before vanishing. Physicists Stephen Hawking and Kip Thorne famously bet on its nature. Hawking bet against the black hole, and happily paid up when he lost.
