Hiding in the glare of the brightest star lives the Pup: a burned out stellar core squeezed to the size of Earth while keeping the mass of a Sun. A teaspoon of Sirius B would weigh several tons. It was once the heavier of the pair, lived faster, and got to the end first; in a few billion years, Sirius A will follow it into retirement.
