Sirius
STAR · the brightest in our night sky
No star in the night sky outshines Sirius. It sparkles bluish white in the constellation of the Great Dog, and because its light crosses our restless air, it often flickers in many colors near the horizon. Ancient Egypt set its calendar by its dawn rising, which announced the Nile flood. Sirius is bright mostly because it is close, our glittering neighbor.
