
Jupiter's gravity first tore this comet into a string of 21 pieces, like pearls on a chain, and then pulled them all in. In July 1994 the fragments slammed into Jupiter one after another while the whole world watched through telescopes. The impacts left dark scars in Jupiter's clouds bigger than Earth, a loud reminder of what comets can do, and of how often Jupiter takes the hit for the inner planets.
