A chain of dark clouds that really does trace a smoker's pipe, complete with stem and bowl, drawn in silhouette against the dense star clouds toward the galaxy's heart. Like all dark nebulae it is a reservoir of cold gas and dust, raw material patiently waiting for gravity's signal to start building stars.
