Phoenix landed farther north on Mars than any mission before, scraped at the ground, and there it was: hard, bright water ice just centimeters below the surface, which visibly evaporated in the photos over a few days. Its weather station even watched snow falling from Martian clouds. Winter darkness ended the mission, exactly as planned.
