For years astronomers chased a mysterious gamma ray source with no visible counterpart, and the puzzle earned a name from a Milanese dialect joke: Geminga, roughly meaning it is not there. It turned out to be a nearby neutron star whose radio beams simply never sweep across Earth. We sit in its blind spot, hearing only its gamma ray hum.
