Ganymede's Magnetic Field
GANYMEDE · the only magnetic moon
Ganymede is the only moon with its own magnetic field, generated by a churning liquid iron core, a planet's heart in a moon's body. The field paints auroras around its poles, and Hubble noticed those auroras swaying less than expected: something conductive below was damping them. That something is a buried saltwater ocean. Magnetism as an ocean detector.
