A car sized laboratory lowered onto Mars by a hovering rocket crane, a landing so daring engineers called it the seven minutes of terror. Curiosity climbed through Gale crater and proved the big one: ancient Mars had lakes and rivers with water you could have drunk. Powered by a nuclear battery, it is still driving and drilling today.
