Some theories of the early universe predict leftover defects: threads thinner than a proton but so dense that a kilometer would outweigh the Earth, stretched across the cosmos like cracks in cooling ice. A cosmic string would betray itself by splitting the images of galaxies behind it into identical pairs. Astronomers have looked. The universe, so far, appears uncracked.
