The first spacecraft to land on Mars and actually work. Viking 1 sent home the first photograph ever taken on the Martian surface: rusty rocks under a bright sky, suddenly a real place instead of a dot in a telescope. It searched for microbes with onboard chemistry experiments; the puzzling results are still being debated today.
