On a summer morning in 1908, something exploded above the Siberian wilderness with the force of hundreds of Hiroshima bombs, flattening eighty million trees in a radial pattern, yet leaving no crater: the object, likely a stony asteroid some 50 meters wide, detonated in mid air. Had it arrived hours later, it could have erased a European city. June 30 is now international Asteroid Day.
