Aboriginal Australian sky knowledge includes something brilliant: constellations drawn not from stars but from the dark dust clouds of the Milky Way. The great celestial Emu stretches from the Coalsack, its head, along the band's dark lanes as its neck and body. Its position through the year signaled when emu eggs could be gathered. Tens of thousands of years old, and a reminder that the sky can be read in more than one way.
