Physicist Freeman Dyson reasoned that a truly advanced civilization would eventually want its star's entire energy output, and might surround it with a swarm of collectors. The waste heat of such a structure would glow in infrared, so astronomers have genuinely searched sky surveys for it. Verdict so far: no Dyson spheres found, but checking remains one of the cleverest ways to look for cosmic engineers.
