The most massive star we know, burning in the crowded heart of the Tarantula Nebula in a neighboring galaxy. R136a1 shines with the light of several million Suns and is so fierce that it blows itself apart as it lives, losing the mass of an Earth every few weeks in its stellar wind. Stars like this are rare, brief and magnificent.
