Squeeze a neutron star a little harder and its neutrons themselves might dissolve into a soup of free quarks, creating an object even denser, the last possible form of matter before a black hole. A few observed neutron stars seem suspiciously compact, keeping the idea alive. If quark stars exist, their hearts hold matter in a state no laboratory will ever brew.
