NGC 1999

A greenish white reflecting cloud with a striking dark keyhole, long assumed to be a dense black globule in front. Then telescopes checked at every wavelength and found: the keyhole is genuinely empty, a real hole blasted clean through the nebula, probably by jets from young stars. Sometimes a hole is just a hole, and that is the discovery.
