Phases of the Moon

The Moon makes no light of its own; we only see the half that the Sun happens to light. As the Moon circles us, we view that lit half from changing angles: a thin crescent, a half, a full disk, and back. One common mix up, cleared up: the phases are not Earth's shadow. That only happens during a lunar eclipse.
