Eros
ASTEROID · the first one we landed on
A peanut shaped near Earth asteroid that made history: in 2001 the NEAR Shoemaker spacecraft, never designed to land, was gently set down on its surface anyway, the first landing on an asteroid ever. It kept sending data from the ground. Eros is large for a near Earth object, a reminder of why we keep watch on our cosmic neighborhood.
