A smooth shell of ice, crisscrossed by long rusty cracks, and underneath it an ocean of liquid water that may hold more water than all of Earth's seas combined. Tidal flexing keeps that ocean warm. Because liquid water is the first thing life needs, Europa is one of the most promising places to look for it, and the Europa Clipper spacecraft is on its way to do exactly that.
