A dying carbon star so wrapped in its own soot that visible light barely escapes; in infrared, though, it blazes as one of the brightest stars in the entire sky. CW Leonis is shedding its substance in thick shells of carbon dust, the very dust that future planets and even life chemistry are built from. Stars like this are the universe's soot factories, in the best sense.
