The comet a whole generation remembers. Hale-Bopp had an unusually giant nucleus, and it stayed visible to the naked eye for a record 18 months through 1996 and 1997. It showed off two clearly separate tails, a blue gas tail and a curved white dust tail. More people watched Hale-Bopp than any comet in history.
