SATURN'S RINGS · the gap with a cause
The dark gap between Saturn's two brightest rings, wide enough to roll Mercury through, discovered by Giovanni Cassini in 1675. It is not empty by accident: any ring particle orbiting there circles Saturn exactly twice for each orbit of the moon Mimas, whose repeated tugs sweep the lane clean. A moon, conducting traffic from far away.
