A dying giant. If Betelgeuse sat where our Sun is, it would swallow Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars and even Jupiter. One day, perhaps tomorrow, perhaps in a hundred thousand years, it will explode as a supernova. When that happens, it will outshine the half Moon in our sky for weeks. We are far enough away to simply enjoy the show.
