A giant elliptical galaxy whose central black hole fires a jet of near lightspeed particles almost exactly at Earth. Looking straight into the beam makes it appear dramatically brightened and twitchy, flaring in gamma rays within hours. Markarian 421 is one of our best laboratories for physics at energies no machine on Earth can reach.
