A nearly perfect sphere of blackness that looks like a hole punched in the star field. Barnard 68 is a Bok globule, a compact knot of gas and dust so cold and dense that no starlight passes through. It is teetering on the edge of collapse: within a few hundred thousand years, this dark drop will ignite into a new star.
