The final Apollo mission brought the first scientist: geologist Harrison Schmitt, who promptly found bright orange soil, tiny beads of volcanic glass from the Moon's fiery youth. Commander Gene Cernan drew his daughter's initials in the dust before climbing the ladder as the last human on the Moon, so far. The next footprints are already being planned.
