Alan Shepard, the first American in space, finally reached the Moon at age 47, and celebrated in style: he smuggled a golf club head aboard and hit two balls across the lunar surface. In the weak gravity, they flew, as he joked, miles and miles. The crew also hauled a hand cart of tools up the slopes of the Fra Mauro highlands.
