Small clumps of stars merged into larger ones, which merged again: galaxy building had begun, far faster than expected. The James Webb telescope keeps finding surprisingly mature galaxies at surprisingly early times, cheerfully stressing the textbooks. Our own Milky Way began assembling in this era, swallowing neighbors, and it never really stopped.
