Einstein's equations permit tunnels connecting distant points of spacetime, shortcuts that science fiction adores. The catch: keeping such a tunnel open seems to require exotic matter with negative energy, of which nature has shown us none in usable form. No wormhole has ever been observed. The honest verdict: mathematically legal, practically unbuilt, wonderfully unforbidden.
