One of the brightest stars of the northern summer and a scientific celebrity: for a long time astronomers measured the brightness of every other star against Vega. It spins so fast that it bulges at the equator, and it is wrapped in a disk of dust, possibly a planetary system under construction. In about 12,000 years, thanks to the slow wobble of Earth's axis, Vega will be our north star.
