Around Earth swirl millions of fragments of old rockets and broken satellites, from paint flecks to bus sized wrecks. At orbital speed, even a piece the size of a screw can cripple a spacecraft, so the big pieces are tracked constantly and stations dodge them. Engineers now work on cleanup ideas, because every collision creates more debris in a dangerous chain reaction.
