A deep red carbon star with a party trick no one fully understands: roughly every eight and a half years it fires a glowing blob of plasma into space, each one about twice the size of Mars. The chief suspect is an unseen companion star that skims through V Hydrae's bloated atmosphere and flings material out. A stellar cannon on a slow timer.
