Our star: a giant ball of glowing gas. Deep in its core, hydrogen fuses into helium and releases the energy that reaches us as light and warmth, after an eight minute journey. The Sun holds 99.86 percent of all the mass in the solar system. The dark sunspots are slightly cooler patches, and their number rises and falls in an eleven year rhythm.
