The space between stars is not empty, just shy: about one atom per cubic centimeter, plus dust, magnetic fields and cosmic rays. Spread across the galaxy, that near nothing adds up to billions of Suns worth of raw material, the reservoir from which every new star and planet is built. Stars are just the interstellar medium, condensed.
