The Sun constantly exhales a thin storm of charged particles that sweeps through the whole solar system. Earth's magnetic field deflects it like an invisible shield, and where particles sneak in near the poles, they paint the auroras. The solar wind also inflates the vast bubble around our solar system and pushes comet tails away from the Sun, which is why tails never trail behind.
