GRB 221009A, the BOAT
GAMMA RAY BURST · brightest of all time
Astronomers nicknamed it the BOAT, the Brightest Of All Time. In October 2022 a beam of gamma rays from a collapsing giant star two billion light years away swept over Earth and briefly dazzled detectors, even stirring our upper atmosphere. Events this bright are expected about once in ten thousand years. Earth happened to be looking straight down the barrel, from a very safe distance.
