A dead star with crumbs on its face: G29-38 is wrapped in warm dust from an asteroid that wandered too close and was torn apart, and its atmosphere shows the chemical traces of swallowed rocky material. White dwarfs like this let us read the composition of alien asteroids, by examining the corpse star's last meal.
