In December 2011 this comet dove straight through the Sun's million degree outer atmosphere. Every expert expected it to evaporate. Instead, Lovejoy burst out the other side, a bit scruffy but alive, and grew a glorious tail that astronauts photographed from the International Space Station. Comets are tougher than they look.
