The first known centaur, a class of icy bodies wandering between Jupiter and Neptune on unstable orbits. Chiron confused everyone by growing a faint coma like a comet despite being asteroid sized, and observations even hint at material rings. Centaurs are Kuiper belt escapees in transit; some will end up as the great comets of future skies.
